KORAIL with a young child: lap travel or a separate seat?

Traveling by KORAIL with a child under six? Compare lap travel with a paid seat, including the allowance when one adult accompanies several children.

Updated Oct 8, 2026

Decide whether your young child needs their own seat before comparing family train costs. The rail-pass guidance allows a qualifying child aged 0–5 to travel without a seat, but a separate seat requires the appropriate paid ticket.

A free child place is not a reserved seat

The pass listing describes one child aged 0–5 travelling without a seat per accompanying traveller over 13. That can work for a short journey if the adult is comfortable sharing. It does not give the child an additional seat simply because one happens to look empty.

Price the family you will actually book

For a longer ride, a reserved child seat may make the journey easier. Include that ticket in the family total instead of comparing an adult-only pass price with a full set of individual tickets. Families with several young children also need to account for the stated accompanying-traveller limit.

Keep reservation details together

Use matching passenger and passport information when arranging pass reservations. Decide on seating before booking the adults so the party’s reservations can be planned together. The pass is sold to foreign visitors; the child rule does not change that eligibility condition.

A good fit when…

  • Families deciding comfort and cost before reserving trains

Reconsider when…

  • Assuming free admission means a guaranteed separate seat

A few things worth knowing

Can an eligible child automatically occupy any empty seat?

No. Travelling without a seat does not create a seat reservation.

Does the adult pass price describe the full family cost?

Only after you include any separate child seats and the correct adult pass quantities.
